R. Douglas Van Kay - LEED AP
Project Manager

Doug is a graduate from the University of Florida, where he received his Bachelor of Design in 2002.

Prior to joining YSM Design Mr. Van Kay has worked for both Architects and Contractors and as a result has diverse experience and has worked on a wide variety of project types for both the public and private sector.

As one of the firm's project managers, Doug is responsible for production of construction documents, including product research, code reviews and extensive job-site inspections during construction. He also does conceptual and schematic design, construction administration and quality control.

Doug got his start in a creative direction early in life: "My parents were creative people, so I've always been around the arts. My father was a graphic artist, so I spent a lot of time in his studio at home. As I got older, I thought about how I could make a living in a creative way."

For Doug, working on LEED projects is a natural extension of what he enjoys during non-work hours. "I like a lot of outdoor activities, hiking, gardening, etc., so contact with the environment and sustainability is something I always consider. When the green movement connected with the building industry, it seemed a natural fit."

“I'm very passionate about what I do. I like the fast pace of automotive work and the challenges associated with variety of brand images that we deal with. I also like learning, and I find the automotive business particularly interesting. Be it on the owner’s side or on the brand side I often find myself working with people who have highly specific knowledge and who've been doing what they do for decades. It's a great knowledge base to tap into and it is interesting to see how the retail automotive industry and brand identity has evolved over the years."
